Voice to text app for writing content from blogs to books
I've been using speech-to-text transcription for things like notes and text messages for quite some time already. But recently I started using this technology for writing longer-form content including blog posts and even drafting a novel. In this short blog post, I'll provide some reasoning for that, along with a quick overview of SpeakApp. Mind you, I've created this blog almost entirely with just my voice speaking into my iPhone.
I used to have a concern that I would spend more time editing the transcript in case of using voice-to-text apps. But with current AI-powered solutions, it seems that the accuracy of the transcript has improved significantly. I'm specifically referring to SpeakApp AI app. The team behind this app uses top AI models and puts a lot of effort into delivering very high-accuracy transcripts. I do see a significant improvement in transcription accuracy over Google's speech-to-text available in Google Docs and some other services I tried.
Let's try to quantify how much faster using voice-to-text is compared to typing. On average a person is saying around 1000 words in 10 minutes. While typing you can expect to have around 300 words maximum. So you can get 3 times more content for the same time. You do need some time to review the transcript and edit it, but you also need to review and edit what you typed out.
But what is more important for me, I can write drafts of my long-form content while walking now. This is simply amazing. I'm not even sure if we need to compare the speed of writing with your voice to typing at all. I love walking outside brainstorming new things and creating drafts of the content just by speaking into the app. I use my wireless AirPods so it does not look strange when I talk to myself. It just looks like I'm talking on the phone with someone.
With SpeakApp specifically, I'm getting a very good draft of the content that I can also summarize or even polish a bit with the AI editing option. So once I finally get to sit in front of my laptop I already have 90% of my writing done. Another really handy feature is translation. I'm not a native English speaker and prefer to write in my native language, but I do post a lot in English. So once I get the draft in SpeakApp I also instantly translate it into English in the app and then send it to myself for final review and posting on the web.
To sum up, I think the speech-to-text technology finally reached the level where you can easily get very accurate transcription and save a lot of time. But the biggest benefit of writing with speech-to-text is not the speed, but the flexibility of being able to write wherever you are including walking or commuting. If you are a content creator, I encourage you to give it a try.
